Louis Tiffany began creating his signature lamps in 1895, while working as a stained glass designer for an interior design company in New York. The leftover bits of multicolored glass intrigued him, and he began assembling them into beautiful designs lamps. Soon, while he was still designing for the company as well as painting, he began designing lamps that would become known as one of the most important American artistic contributions of the late 19th century. His lamps became part of Europe’s Art Nouveau movement, and heavily influenced stained glass creation.
Louis Comfort Tiffany worked in New York, designing stained glass for an interior design firm. The leftover pieces of glass at the end of each work day inspired him to start designed lampshades from them. He did continue doing the design work for the firm for a while, but soon he began exclusively designing and creating his signature lamps. A few artists and craftspeople worked with him to create the lamps, which were art but that he intended to be used in people’s homes and used, rather than simply admired.
